Frequently Asked Questions

How much does COBRA cost per month?

COBRA costs the full monthly premium (what you and your employer were paying combined) plus a 2% administrative fee. Most people pay $400–$700/month for individual coverage and $1,200–$2,000/month for family coverage.

How long do I have to decide on COBRA?

You have 60 days from losing coverage or receiving your COBRA election notice (whichever is later) to elect COBRA. Coverage is retroactive to the day your employer coverage ended.

Is COBRA or Marketplace insurance cheaper?

For most people who qualify for ACA subsidies, Marketplace plans are significantly cheaper than COBRA. Use the calculator above to compare your specific situation.

How long can I keep COBRA coverage?

COBRA coverage lasts up to 18 months after job loss. In some circumstances (such as disability), it can extend to 29 or 36 months.

When does COBRA make sense over Marketplace?

COBRA makes sense if you've nearly met your annual deductible, need to keep specific doctors or treatments mid-year, or expect to get new employer coverage within 1–3 months.
