🏥Insurance Basics

Dependent

A family member — typically a spouse or child — covered under your health insurance plan.

Full Definition

A dependent is a person who qualifies to be covered under your health insurance plan, in addition to you (the primary insured). Under the ACA, parents can keep children on their plan until age 26 regardless of student or marital status. Spouses can typically be added as dependents. Some plans also cover domestic partners. Adding dependents usually increases your premium.

Real-World Example

You enroll in your employer's health plan and add your spouse and two children as dependents. Your family is all covered under one plan. Your 24-year-old college graduate can stay on your plan until they turn 26.
