Medicare Part A
Hospital insurance covering inpatient stays, skilled nursing, and some home health care.
Full Definition
Medicare Part A is the hospital insurance component of Original Medicare. It covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility (after a qualifying hospital stay), hospice care, and some home health services. Most people pay no Part A premium if they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. There is a per-benefit-period deductible for hospital stays.
Real-World Example
After a hip replacement requiring a 3-day hospital stay and 3 weeks of skilled nursing rehab, Part A covers the majority of those costs (after your Part A deductible is met).
